ratatouille is a funny movie, and the music is a real big part of that. you can often hear michael giacchinos name in the credits, and in the main title (ratatouille), so its great to hear his name, but more importantly you can hear his name, and you should. he manages to perfectly fit the tone of the film, and with his style of music, the film fits perfectly too.

but that is not to say that giacchino isn’t a talented musician. even though i feel that his scores often feel too simplistic, there are aspects of his work that are very good. “rio,” for example, feels like a throwback to the disney scores of the late 1980s. i always think of things like the opening of “it’s a small world,” the huge synth line in the opening of “i’m not there,” or the opening of “colors of the wind.” giacchino has the ability to take a simple melody and build it up with incredible skill. he does this again with camille, that french pop song that he wrote. its very similar to the song “i’m not there,” but it is done with a more french ambiance, reminiscent of something you might hear at the moulin rouge.

the first thing to strike me about ratatouille is the very brief orchestration. the score is composed for a chamber orchestra, and even with the addition of a few synthesizers, the score fits comfortably within the orchestra’s range. the music is surprisingly dark, and giacchino almost seems to be trying to lull us into a false sense of security. most of the best moments are very small, and they require active listening in order to grasp the nuances of giacchino’s compositions. there is also a tendency for giacchino to strike a balance between the emotional intensity of the main theme and the surface-level enjoyment of the occasional cues. the music for the opening credits is a good example of this. with a simple light brass and percussion section, giacchino gives us an uplifting, almost triumphant melody, with the occasional sharp notes for a small percussion section that pokes fun at the title character. giacchino then brings in a big string section that builds to the climax, with the principal theme that we have all been waiting for. then, the music ends on an uplifting chord and leaves us satisfied, ready for more.
