the games are set in the same middle-earth as the lord of the rings, with the world of arda having been turned into a war zone between the forces of good and evil, but the player characters are not the ringwraiths, but the armies of gondor and rohan, gondor being the more powerful of the two and rohan more of a collection of disparate clans. in fact, the latter part of the lord of the rings story is pretty much discarded in favor of new content, leaving the games with a more rigid structure. players are first introduced to the world of arda in the opening chapters, and then given a tutorial on the basic rules of the combat system, which then allows them to begin their journey. the first part of the tutorial introduces the characters to the new version of the fellowship of the ring, and familiarizes them with the new weapons and armor available to them. players are then challenged to find their way through a new version of the mines of moria, with their choice of a character being dictated by the events of the tutorial. the first part of the game concludes with the characters in the arms of sauron, in the vicinity of the black gate. the tutorial informs them that gollum has captured their party, and they must rescue them from the creature before they can go on to the next phase of their adventure.

its hard not to shake the feeling that it would have been easier for interplay to have simply produced a game in the first place, than to have to go to the trouble of adapting the lord of the rings to the cd-rom format.

i dont think that interplay was at that time in a position to produce such a game, and even if it were, i think the likelihood is that this would have meant leaving behind the relatively low budget of the lord of the rings.
