We present a reconstruction algorithm to speed up acquisition of 3D emission data for positron emission tomography (PET). This algorithm is based on a technique known as filtered interpolation. The main difference between the reconstruction algorithm we present and the well-known filtered backprojection (FBP) algorithm is that the FBP algorithm projects 2D emission data from many emission angles to a set of chosen angles. On the other hand, the method presented here projects emission data from a limited set of angles to many emission angles, thus achieving an order of magnitude speed-up with a comparable image quality. We validate the proposed algorithm both theoretically and empirically by applying it to simulated emission data, and on real-world emission data. The speed of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by empirical data where, in all cases tested, the running time is half that of the FBP algorithm.Photojournalist William J.
