In the valley below Reaver’s Mark, the Elves met heavily fortified Dark Elven cities. In the battles that followed, both sides were very much unequal, the Elves suffering heavy casualties. The Dark Elves were not to be denied, however. Cursed by the gods who cursed them, the Dark Elves ever thirsted for the destruction of the Elves, and they were now unleashed upon them. The Elves fought bravely, though much of the Elven population was now fled to the outskirt of the forest. As the hosts of the Elves broke through the Dark Elven walls, Kaelthas called a great council of the elders. In the winter’s gales, they met in secret to plan the strategies for the next day. As the skies cleared from rain and snow, Kaelthas summoned his scouts and his generals. The plan was simple. The armies of the Elves would hold their position, and the Elves would wait for the War-Makers to break their fortresses. As days went by, malefactors and runaway mages and Dark Elven armies passed through the ranks of the Elves, and the Elves let them go unmolested. After a week, however, Kaelthas noticed that the seemingly unstoppable army of Malekith’s in the distance was less than half its original strength, yet the tides of war were still unfurled around them. The two forces came to stare each other in the eye as the phoenixes scurried between the skirmishers. As Aravin sailed through the skies towards the dark army, the battle was joined. In a single, glorious swoop, three Phoenixes fell upon the dark army and began to unleash unspeakable fire upon their troops. The Dark Elves scattered in terror as the three shining corpses burned into the sky. The three corpses came to rest on the dark soil of a great, white statue. As the light of the sun touched the hand of the statue, Malekith fell to his knees before the fallen heroes. The God of Wisdom spoke one final time, telling Malekith that his time in the world was almost up, that the final flame he had lit in the dark world would be extinguished, and that the day of his resurrection was almost upon him. As the warriors, bloodied and battered, looked upon the statue, they saw wings unfurled from the ankles of the statue. They beheld a human form of pure white skin, hair shining white-gold, bearing great scars and a commanding, smiling visage. When the sun rose again that day, Malekith and all the Dark Elven nation watched in awe as the Goddess of the elven race rose from the ground with a terrifying shriek. From the skies, the Goddess transformed into a beautiful red-haired woman. Her face was as divine as that of an angel, but she was dressed all in green and her robe was trimmed with gold and silver. Her eyes were as red as the Blood Royal gems of the elf-queen Kefkala, but the Goddess of the elves no longer looked upon the Dark Elves with hatred, but with love. As Kefkala once gave her blessing to the dark elves in the previous war, the Elven God Selene blessed the Dark Elves with mercy. She commended Kaelthas to the people, and as he was beloved, he was chosen as the first of the new elite order of Mage-Knights, the Phoenix King. The meeting was quiet, yet explosive. Malekith, rejected by the elven council, laughed in the face of the three fallen heroes. When they offered him the help of the elven army, the Dark Elven nation mocked them, claiming that the dark elves were no longer worth the fight.
